Butterflies and Pink Roses
We had been dating for a few of months when February 14th, 2009 rolled around. Most of our time had been spent getting to know each other. We had gone out to dinner a few times and went bowling once, but this was our first ‘big date’.
This was also the first time either of us had celebrated Valentines Day with a significant other. I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know what to expect but at the same time I was giddy with excitement. I knew he was planning to cook me dinner which also made me anxious to finally try his cooking.
Since we were having dinner at his place, I decided it would be best if I met him there. I remember getting little butterflies in my stomach as I walked up the steps, excited to see him and find out what he had planned. My heart skipped when he opened the door.
On the counter I saw the most gorgeous bouquet of one dozen pink roses, a card and a little box. Inside the box was not a ring (in case you were wondering) but a beautiful necklace with three pink hearts on it. He definitely got some bonus points for knowing my favorite color and I just melted at all the thought he had put into this evening.
Candlelit Dinner for Two
When I sat down for dinner, he put the most delicious smelling plate of food in front of me. On the plate was a piece of chicken cordon bleu with Gruyere cheese and prosciutto, fresh green beans with sauteed mushrooms and pancetta, garlic and chive mashed potatoes and a roll from the bakery.
Everything, aside from the rolls, he made from scratch using some of the best ingredients he could find. I knew that I not only found a man who treated me well, respected me and loved me; I found a man who most definitely knew how to cook!
The cheesecake was so rich and decadent with a hint of tartness from the raspberries. It also had the perfect velvety texture that all good cheesecakes should have. It was so good I had to close my eyes for a moment just to truly enjoy the experience while the flavors melded together on my tongue. This was definitely the best Valentines I had ever had, a day that I will always remember.
From This Day Forward
I did not tell him this until at least a few months later but I knew from that day on that I would one day be his wife. Though I do remember telling my sister the day before Valentines Day that I would have said yes if he asked me to marry him. Over the next few months we grew closer to discussing engagement and marriage but it wasn’t without a few bumps in the road.
