Last week, I posted about how to make coffeehouse drinks at home. So I thought I would share with you my morning coffee routine. I have been drinking it this way everyday for about a month now.
I used to drink flavored coffee creamers but since I have recently been trying to cut back on processed foods, I decided the creamer needed to go. This was a huge thing for me because I’ve been using store bought creamers just about everyday since I started drinking coffee about nine years ago. After a little trial and error I finally found my new morning drink!
My New Morning Drink
I needed something that would satisfy my need for coffee in the morning yet still have some flavor. I’ve seen recipes for homemade coffee creamer, but I decided to try something else first. So I came up with this recipe for a vanilla au lait.
If you recall from my first coffee post, an au lait is brewed coffee with steamed or frothed milk. I have made these at home before, but I typically used flavored coffee so this was something a little different for me.
Initially I just used half and half, raw sugar and pure vanilla extract. It was decent, but I still sort of missed the flavored creamer. I am not sure what prompted this, but I tried some coconut oil in it one day and I was in heaven! I no longer missed my old coffee creamer. I have no idea why it tastes so much better with coconut oil but it definitely does. So now coconut oil is my “secret” ingredient to making this awesome coffee drink.
A few tips:
My husband and I both drink coffee in the morning so we brew a half pot (6 cups) everyday. He usually gets it ready to go the night before so all he has to do is press the on button when he is ready to brew it. Our coffee pot does have an automatic time setting but we don’t use it. Honestly, I have no idea why…lol.
To make the half pot of coffee we put five rounded tablespoons of ground coffee in the brew basket.
If you are making your frothed milk with a whisk, place the handle between your hands and rub them together as fast as possible to get the whisk to turn. This is the easiest way I have found to ‘froth’ milk without a special device.
If you are looking for something to make frothed milk I highly recommend getting a frother like an aerolatte, which is what I use. It only takes about 10-15 seconds to make perfectly frothed and creamy milk. I absolutely love it! My husband was nice enough to buy it for me when I decided to quit drinking store bought creamers. I love it because I feel like I am drinking coffeehouse coffee every morning and I don’t even have to go anywhere.
