Next week my husband and I will celebrate our three year wedding anniversary! It seems hard to believe that we’ve been married for three years already. I am glad to have had him by my side these past few years and I look forward to many more.
Upon First Meeting and Coffee for Two
My husband and I met through a group at the church we both happened to go to. We had seen each other at a few gatherings but not really talked much. In October of 2008 we were both at a Halloween party that was put on by the group. I think this is when he started to notice me. It wasn’t until about a month later though that I really caught his attention and I secretly started to notice him too.
It was nearing the end of November and we were both at another gathering of the same group where we played some fun games and basically just hung out. I can’t remember if I even talked to him or not but I know I caught his attention because the next night I got a facebook email from him asking me if I would like to go out for coffee. Here’s part of the message (and yes I still have it saved):
I know this probably seems like it’s coming from out of the blue. To be honest with you, right now I kind of feel like I’m stepping out onto a very flimsy branch, but as the saying goes “nothing ventured, nothing gained”. With that being said I’ve been giving it some thought lately and I was wondering if you would allow me take you out for a cup of coffee sometime.
I will admit that I was a bit shocked and was not sure what to do at first but how could I say no to that!? I knew I wanted to get to know this guy better so I wrote him back, in which I spelled his name wrong – oops, and gave him my phone number so he could call me. He forgave me for getting his name spelled wrong and we set up a date to go out for coffee the Wednesday before thanksgiving.
We headed out to a local coffee shop, which he thought at first may not be the best idea since I worked in the same coffee shop, just the location across town. But I assured him that I loved coffee and that it was the perfect idea! So we talked over coffee about everything we could think of and stayed until the place closed up for the night. This was just the start of something great, and many more talks over coffee to come.
What’s a Cookie Got to Do With It?
When I met my husband I knew little about how to cook. I also had a tendency to burn things and was utterly confused by most recipes so I pretty much steered clear of the the kitchen. My dad even used to make fun of me that I couldn’t even boil water. What I did cook consisted of mostly boxed meals or heating up things already prepared. Very rarely did I make anything from scratch except maybe cookies for the holidays.
On the night of our first date, I happened to be baking cranberry and white chocolate oatmeal cookies for Thanksgiving. When he came to my door I brought a cookie and asked if he would like one. He took the cookie and thankfully he liked it. I’m sure I had him fooled into thinking I was a great cook. I mean I was baking cookies and all…right?!
Love at First Bite
Well, it didn’t take long for him to find out how not such a great cook I was. A couple of weeks after our first date I invited him over for dinner. I had bought a pasta dish and garlic bread from the frozen food isle. It was obviously nothing fancy but I thought it would be easy to make. However, I got nervous that I would screw it up. So my now husband, being the great guy he is, did most of the cooking. Thankfully he was gracious about it and it turned out well.
This is when I discovered that I found a man who knew his way around the kitchen and I liked it! A few months later, he made dinner for me on our first valentines day together. Little did I know that he didn’t just know his way around the kitchen but he was practically a chef in his own right.
I already knew I loved him at his point, but from the first bite of that amazing meal I was completely hooked. I knew without a doubt that this would be the man I would spend the rest of my life with. I also knew that I had a thing or two to learn in the kitchen and who better to teach me than this amazing man I would one day call my husband?!
