My husband’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago. For his birthday dessert, he asked me to make an apple crisp with some of the apples we had picked from our apple picking adventure. As I mentioned above, I’ve made a few fruit crisps, so with that in mind I set out to create something a little different for this apple crisp.
First, I added some spices to the apples with a little brown sugar instead of granulated sugar. This helped to give the apples a nice spice and sweetness. Most recipes I have seen just leave the apples alone which is good too but I wanted something a little different. I also like a little extra oat topping, so I upped the ingredient amounts there. Then for an added bonus, I topped it with some crock-pot caramel I had made recently which was the perfect complement.
Tip about Caramel
You’ve probably seen crock-pot caramel recipes floating around online, especially on Pinterest. I finally decided to give it a try and let me tell you that stuff is dangerously delicious! I was tempted to eat it right out of the jar, well I may have actually done that a few times. Yes, it is that good!
If you do make caramel this way, just make sure you let it cool after you take it out of the crock-pot and then store it in the fridge. It is not shelf stable and you don’t want it to go bad. I wouldn’t worry about it’s lifespan in the fridge because I honestly doubt it will last that long!
